The name derives from Baggeshotte Common &#8211; the hangout of the notorious gang of 18<sup>th<\/sup> century highwaymen led by Captain Macheath. It was adopted as the name of the band during an early production by Chalemie of John Gay\u2019s The Beggars\u2019 Opera. Since then, the group has reverted primarily to the medieval and early renaissance period, performing music from the 14<sup>th<\/sup> to the 16<sup>th<\/sup> century.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>As far as we know, the town of Bagshot, to which the Common is still attached (though now under the name of Bagshot Heath) had no official Waits, but we can believe that in earlier times the nearby common was frequently the scene of great revelry, with dancing and music, as the highwaymen celebrated their latest lawless assault upon the unwary travellers.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"660\" src=\"https:\/\/stadspijpers.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/bagshotte-1024x660.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-798\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stadspijpers.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/bagshotte-1024x660.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/stadspijpers.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/bagshotte-300x193.jpg 300w, https:\/\/stadspijpers.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/bagshotte-768x495.jpg 768w, https:\/\/stadspijpers.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/bagshotte.jpg 1288w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Our emblem, with its figures of deer\u2019s head, crossed pistols, shawm &amp; trumpet, thus represents the time when Baggeshotte Common was a royal hunting estate, through to its role as a convenient gangster hideaway near the main road from London to the South West (now known as the M3). The shawm, trumpet and sackbut are our principal instruments, though like most waits we also play upon many other instruments of the period.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"457\" height=\"573\" src=\"https:\/\/stadspijpers.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/bagshotte-logo.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-801\" style=\"width:133px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stadspijpers.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/bagshotte-logo.jpg 457w, https:\/\/stadspijpers.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/bagshotte-logo-239x300.jpg 239w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 457px) 100vw, 457px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Baggeshotte Wayes zijn een subgroep van de Chalemie Theatre Company, die zich specialiseert in het herwaarderen van oude muziek en dans. De naam is afgeleid van Baggeshotte Common, ontmoetingsplaats van de beruchte 18e eeuwse snelwegmannen, geleid door kapitein Macheath. De naam is overgekomen tijdens een vroegere productie van Chalemie, de John Gay&#8217;s Beggars&#8217; Opera. Sindsdien houdt de groep zich vooral bezig met muziek uit de middeleeuwen en vroege renaissance, van de 14e tot de 18e eeuw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Zover als we weten had de stad Bagshot oorspronkelijk geen eigen Waytes, ,maar muziek en dans zullen hier in vroeger tijden zeker geklonken hebben. Het logo, met de afbeeldingen van herten, gekruiste pistolen en schalmei met trompet verwijst naar de tijd dat Baggeshotte Common een koninklijk jachtterrein was.
